Sleep is an important part of good health.  In an article here it lists all of the details about why you should get a good night's sleep.  The short version of the list I've put below.  To read more click here.

1.  Sleep keeps your heart healthy.

2.  Sleep may help prevent cancer.

3.  Sleep reduces stress.

4.  Sleep reduces inflammation.

5.  Sleep makes you more alert.

6.  Sleep bolsters your memory.

7.  Sleep may help you lose weight.

8.  Naps make you smarter.

9.  Sleep may reduce your risk for depression.

10.  Sleep helps the body make repairs.

Okay, I've never commented here - I'm just a little lurker . . . but a spa gift card? Are you kidding? How can one not compete for that?

I got to bed at 10:30 and woke up at 6:30 - so 8 hours of sleep! Yea!

This makes me feel better. :) My husband and I were going to get up at 5:30 and go running. But I have an overly packed day today ending with a family session (4 young kids) this evening. I decided to take the extra hour and 1/2 of sleep instead of running. Bad right... well maybe not according to Davina. I will run tomorrow and it will all be good. :)

this is some great motivation to get to bed earlier. i try, but my midnight bedtime always gets delayed. this month will be better, and hopefully it will be enough to start a better habit.

Alright, i'm officially tempted.
I usually am better on Sundays' but last night I stayed up working on my new organization system thanks to Love Affair. No excuses. I went to bed at 12:30am and got up at 6:30am. oops. only 6 hrs of sleep.

Hooray! Thank you Davina! I'm so excited to win! How about Michael's craft store? I found this awesome blog where she spreads love to the world in creative little ways and I want to try it with my nieces. I'll use the gift card to buy the "tokens" of love. :) http://colormekatie.blogspot.com/search/label/Little%20surprises

How IRONIC that you are writing about sleep. Yesterday I was feeling super run down, I think because too much exercise and not enough refueling/rest. Anyway I passed out at 9pm, got up at 11pm to take a shower and went back to bed until 8am!!! Today I'm feeling oh so much better.

I read in a running magazine to sleep more when you are working out a lot for your body to recover. It totally makes sense. In a weird sort of way, it has forced me away from my many late nights because my body just can't do it. I don't want to sound like a goody goody because I still have my midnight rendezvous with the computer! Needing more sleep so I can workout is part of my intention to outsource and change my business to work for me, not the other way around!

But sleeping forever? Yummy!

ooooh! 3 month old= little sleep but im going to try this one out anyway! BUT...last night our little guy slept through the night....and sooooo did I! So, I slept from 11:00-6:30am...woot!

You did it again - great post on sleep. It is so necessary and becomes such a vicious cycle when we don't get that basic. Okay if I link this one on to my worksite at: www.resilientsolutionsinc.com

Thanks a bunch.

I read an article once where the only change the ladies made was to sleep more .... and they all lost weight.

smart call!

Ok, last night I was in bed at 11 p.m., up at 4 a.m.; then went to bed at noon and slept till 3 p.m. ... so what does that make? 5 hours at night and 3 hour nap. Does that count for 8 hours? ;)

I'm so all over this ..... I'm a sleeping champion!

Off to bed for now. :) Yeah, the big challenge will be to be in bed before midnight. But since I don't have to be up by a certain time ..... ;)

ps-congrats, Laura!

I am one who could use so much more sleep. It's a constant problem. Fortunately it's mostly by choice so I can actually do something about it. Thanks for the inspiring post to drive me to sleep more.

bedtime: 10:30 p.m.
sleep time: 9 hours.

I have to say, going to bed early will cut into my reruns of "sex and the city" but I'll survive. ;)

Laura, BRING IT this month .... I was born to sleep. ;)~

August 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Okay, Karen, I'm up for the challenge!
Sleeptime 10:30, woke up at 7:30. Nine hours.

Then went for a 30 minute walk.
We need to add to Davina's list that more sleep helps you be nicer to your kids. :)

Back for day to . . .
Bedtime: 10:30
Wake up: 5:30
on a two day streak . . . here we go!

August 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Stiller

first night--i did it. i was in bed before 12, and i got up at 9. wow, 9 hours; going to bed at a decent time = a lot of sleep time for me. i wouldn't mind getting up earlier if i'm well rested, so we'll see how this bedtime change will help.

August 4, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteramanda310

hahaha! being nicer to your kids. Davina, better add it to the list!

Bedtime: 10.30 p.m.
sleeptime: 10 hours. :)

walked some last night; a few days ago i babysat for a friends's 15-month old. we went on a LONG walk. the thing is: A) i was wearing flip flops. A problem. B) I have long legs. I kept getting them tangled in the stroller! Any suggestions for strollers that have a bit of a handle/distance so your legs don't get caught up and you can walk normally? By the end of our walk, my knees hurt!

August 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Bedtime: 10:30 pm
Sleeptime: just over 7 hours

I don't have kids - but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to be nicer to my husband. *wink*

August 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Stiller

Kids and strollers will do that to you! The decline of your body as you knew it!

Bedtime 10:30, slept til 7:30. Nice 9 hours. Maybe this is a good tool for world peace! If all the world leaders went to bed before midnight... :)

My "baby" turned 5 yesterday! It's hard to believe his birth was five years ago! We took the ferry to San Francisco and went to the aquarium. A perfect day.

August 5, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

laura: the world peace comment is funny, but seems to have some truth to it. my husband and i can't seem to have a healthy conversation about something we disagree about after about 10pm. being rested definitely helps the mood.

karen: how long is long? i'm 5'7" and i strolled my 13month nieces in flip flops using a jogging stroller last week. i didn't have any trouble. so maybe check out jogging strollers. they must work for short people too--their mom is maybe 5 ft. tall.

as for night 2: went to bed at 11:45, got up at 8:45, for 9 hours of sleep again last night. sweet.

August 5, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteramanda310

Laura, better write the white house! ;)

Amanda, I'm about 5'10" .... with 32" inseems for legs. When that time comes, I'll have to look at running strollers for sure! I was commenting to Erik later about it ... shopping carts do the same thing, but I don't trip on them .... there has to be a good option out there!

Bedtime: 11 p.m.
Sleep time: 9:15 hours. :)

I'm still wiped, though. Dug on the patio for more than 2 hours. Know what? It burns more than 700 calories. Nice, but I'm still tired from all the activity yesterday.

Davina,
I check your blog daily and I am really bad about making comments, but I just wanted to tell you that you GIVE HOPE! I really mean that. I attended Love Affair in San Diego and since then you have been giving me hope. Your blog is filled with inspiring women, mothering ideas and ways to stay sane with a photo business.
Thank you Davina for sharing your thoughts, creativity and life with all of us!

last night i went to bed at 11:30, and got up at 9. i know i wasn't asleep that whole time though because of a crazy thunderstorm with hail that woke me up around 1 am.

that's good thing about going to bed a good time--since i had an unexpected interruption--i still woke up feeling well rested.
