favorite.

Grace is a reading maniac.  Can't get enough.  Loves to read everything in sight.

Junie B. Jones especially.

She's a crazy girl that Junie B. Jones.  Unpredictable and nutty.

At school they had a 'dress-up-as-your-favorite-character-day'.

Gracie was Junie.

In every way.

mania. LIFE.

So, question. I was reading one of the Junie books. The english/grammar in them is atrocious. How do you deal with that as a parent? Are you concerned about kids picking up on the incorrect stuff?

Karen, we probably would have been concerned with our first child, but after 4 kids, we are thrilled she loves to read and is working so hard at it! :)

Seriouly, though, our twins are in the thick of the 3rd and 4th Harry Potter books right now and they both read Junie B. and it doesn't seem to have had any lasting negative effect on them. Now if we could get our 13 year old to want to read more than Calvin and Hobbes comics, that would be great...

Hey Karen, I agree! The grammar is atrocious and I'm not in love with some of the ideas in the books or the way Junie acts a lot of the time. Books are great though because they give us great opportunities for discussion.

I remember when Grace first started reading Junie. I would say things like, "What do you think about the way she is treating that person?" or before she would read about what Junie's reaction would be I would ask, "What would you do in that situation?" or "What is the best thing to do?"

I love books because there are so many opportunities for discussion. Junie is one of those books.

And for the record :) our 13 year old really loves to read, too. He's been through the Harry Potter books a couple of times...as well as all of the Calvin and Hobbes books and many others. He is a voracious reader.

I would love to hear any ideas oh how to get a 13 year old boy to be interested in other types of books as well, though. :)

Davina, cute cute pictures of Gracie/Junie. That is a great idea for a special day at school. As usual, your pictures speak to me and tell me a great story.... I am very proud of you and your family.Miss you all very much.

Gotcha Davina + Mike. I agree, 'teachable moments' are really valuable. I applaud you for reading books along with kiddos :)

Oh my adorable. The moments you capture with your family are so priceless! I am out of that loop on reading and I miss it. I do know our 13 year old didn't enjoy reading - now a 23 year old loves and reads so much. For him, it was an interest in the world that got him reading and exploring and now always has a book in his hand about something fascinating and majoring in International Relations.
