lean meat.
Here are some thoughts on lean meats from...you guessed it...my health insurance lady.
Keeping it Lean
Protein is an essential nutrient. It’s found in nearly every tissue including muscle, bone, and skin. Even your hair and nails are made of protein. But some sources – certain cuts of red meat for example – add unnecessary calories and can raise cholesterol and triglycerides. So choose lean protein for good health…without all the unwanted fat. Learn how to get what your body needs without the extra fat with these suggestions:
-Substitutions
Try lean ground turkey instead of hamburger. You can put tofu in your stir-fry instead of beef. And use more beans in your chili than meat.
-Lean Choices
Pick leaner choices – skinless chicken, turkey breast, or fish – more often than red meat. Remember to be careful with marinades and sauces…they can add fat and sodium. Try seasoning with fresh herbs, citrus vinegar, and spices.
-Preparation
Trim off all visible fat before cooking. Then use a cooking method – baking, broiling, or grilling – that doesn’t retain fat like frying does.
-Vegetarian
Remember, meat isn’t your only protein source. Make vegetarian meals with protein-rich beans, soy products, and grains as the base, plus produce.
-Low-Fat
Dairy products are a great source of complete protein, but they can be high in fat. Opt for skim or low-fat milk, cheese, and yogurt (avoid added sugars and flavoring).
-Lean Cuts
Going lean doesn’t mean you can’t ever have red meat. Just minimize the amount and cook leaner cuts.
Take Action!
Think about your favorite meals. What dishes can you make that use lean meats and non-meat protein sources? Write down your ideas so you have a handy list of options!
healthy. LIFE.

my pedometer keeps being reset. :(
so .... i think i'm about 3,500 steps today. i walked to the bank to take care of some banking. so about 2.25 miles for me. ... i actually wonder if erik is right ... if my pedometer isn't quite accurate. according to my bike's ticker, it's more than a mile to the bank. so it'd be more than 2 miles. but my pedometer only says about 1.5 miles. hmmmmmm. google maps says it's 1 mile to there from here. so i am walking more miles than the pedometer says. i have LONG legs, so i'm not shocked.
so now i've read today's post and can comment on it. :)
we had homemade black bean burritos tonight. it's one of our favorite meatless meals. :) we also like to add canned black beans to our salads. :) :) :)
We had rice pasta with a white fish on it. I stirred up some asparagus, garlic and mushrooms with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Added some fresh tomatoes and basil and some "salad sprout greens" from TJ's. It was pretty good. Probably too healthy for my husband although he was a good sport and ate it!
Went to my chiropractor and got my back fixed up. She had a book by Michael Pollan about "real" food. I'd love to read it. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0143114964/ref=ord_cart_shr?_encoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance
Ran 3 miles this morning - the weather's a little cooler - I'm SO ready for fall!
What a fabulous/helpful insurance lady you have! That is a really nice post with some great information.

i'm guessing our hour-long walk was bout 4 miles.....
6 miles in delightful weather - we got a cool front in last night (only 55 this morning!)
Karen - I'd love your black bean burrito recipe - it sounds delish!
3 mile run today.
Davina - can I just say I LOVE your women in business series? It's so insightful and helpful and I find so many new blogs to follow thru it! Thanks for doing that.

I sometimes will cut up tomatoes and mix them in with the onions ... to kick up the flavor some.
well, went on a walk today and the pedometer got bumped and didnm't track. :(
i'm guessing about 1.5 miles.
and, in talking w/ my dad, he says you can celibrate a pedometer. well, not mine b/c it was cheap and free, but interesting. that would have remedied my situation w/ the inaccuracies.
Karen - I'll check out your blog thanks!
Ran 14 miles this morning - anyone that's ever said training for a marathon wasn't hard hasn't ever trained for one - I question my love for running on days like today!
about 3-3.5 miles today. had an awesome e-session. :)
so, this morning I'm UNDER what my goal weight was ... looks like I'm heading down to the next goal!!!!!
i'm guessing i'm under 1/2 a mile today. seriously slacking.
