New contest for July:
Give your ideas (in the comments, of course) for healthy life choices...the person with the most days of suggestions will win a $50 gift certificate for an artist's day. This means a fun day out for just you and this $50 gift certificate will go toward that date with yourself.
As moms...spouses...women...we want to be healthy so that we can hang around for as long as possible and be there for the people who count on us. We also want to be healthy because it helps our energy, our moods, our days to go more smoothly, and we feel like we're doing the right thing.
Below are some ideas to help you prevent obesity in your home. (from Carolina's Health Summer 2009):
Encourage activity. Kids (and I would say we) need a minimum of an hour of daily physical activity. Try family walks or encourage your family members to participate in a sport or volunteer in the community.
Make it a family affair. Don't single out an overweight child or person; cook up nutritious meals for everyone and avoid buying junk food.
Limit TV, computer and video game time, and discourage eating in front of the TV. Mindless snacking is a big source of extra calories.
Skip the force-feeding. Don't force kids to clean their plate if they're not hungry.
Cut back on juice and other sugary beverages. Drinking plain water, flavored water or seltzer can save hundreds of calories (and dollars).
Champion breakfast. A healthy breakfast ramps up metabolism, gives kids energy and helps curb overeating later in the day.
Let there be snacks. Fresh or dried fruit, nuts, low-fat yogurt and air popped popcorn can give kids a nutrient boost and prevent overeating. But don't be too strict-let your child know that the occasional pizza run with friend is OK, too.
Be supportive. Remind your family that you love them no matter what and that many of the celebrities they see on TV don't have realistic body types.
You can check your body mass index (BMI) here.
healthy. LIFE.

KAREN you rock!!! One day...and you got me!!! Congratulations! Even sick! It must have been the day you wrote "hi" that put you over the top! :)
Okay, I'm motivated now! I thought of a good snackin' healthy eating tip. I saw somewhere that you could use muffin tins and fill the holes with nuts, dried fruit, carrots, dips. I know my #2 son would dig that. It makes healthy snackin' more fun.
Congrats Karen. During this time of year my husband plays rugby, so every evening we go to the park where my husband has rugby practice and me and our kids walk around or play at the park while he's practicing. Anyways sports teams are a great way to stay healthy and have fun.
woah, thanks ladies! so, Larua ... do you retract laighin at me for the 'hi' comments? ;)
ok, so I know I'm feeling better. How? Well, I tore out the wall between the kitchen and dining room. YUP. I did. :) Husband helped minimally )twice he held wood for me). Other than that, all me!!!!
Also did some working out. Weights for 20 minutes and biking for the same.
Ok, my healthy life choice ideas .... well, last summer we ate grilled zucchini w/ butter. Well, this summer I've subbed the butter for extra virgin olive oil ... and it is SOOOO tasty!!!!! We had some tonight. It was SO spectacular!!!! I could eat that stuff for DAYS!!!!!
So, ladies, if you haven't already, make friends w/ the extra virgin olive oil. :)
so, yesterday on the bike i was reading ..... and it said to eat higher calorie breakfasts. that way you have EVERGY and drive throughout the day. and on average, they say those people will lose more weight + keep it off.
so, this morning, it was a PBJ for me ... protien in that peanut butter! we'll see how it works.
My hubby and I decided to take walks late at night when the day is cooler; I've noticed he talks more and I can listen and vice versa. It's nice to feel healthier physically and mentally recharged too.
My hubby and I decided to take walks late at night when the day is cooler; I've noticed he talks more and I can listen and vice versa. It's nice to feel healthier physically and mentally recharged too. I've also been muching on a quick and easy pasta salad w/ low fat dressing and veggies...it's great for summer's and lasts for a day or two of snacking:)
I like the idea of walking with hubby. Anytime to connect is good!
I am enjoying my farmer's market tomatoes with basil, garlic, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I added a little chopped spinach and half a can of tuna for lunch today. Summer is the best for fresh produce!
well, the "filling" breakfast didn't feel more filling at 11 a.m. hmmmmmmmm....
and laura, I second summer for veggies! Erik was cutting a tomato in the kitchen yesterday (after my wall-tearing-down extravaganza) and ti just SMELLED so fantastic!!!!! Tomatoes from the store don't smell that good.
Mikki, my husband is off at scout camp this week and I miss him very much. I totally wish he were here to take a walk with and talk. He has no cell phone reception and I'm getting the feeling of what people who have lost their spouse must feel like. It's the daily chit chat that people must miss the most...and a hug right about now would be really nice.
Karen, I was waiting to hear about that breakfast. If it was going to be more filling I was thinking of trying it. I guess I'll pass on the extra calories, etc.
And Laura, I totally agree about the veggies. There is nothing like a homegrown tomato!!
Davina...nice to have you back! We'll give you a big ole Move It Monday group hug! :) (not the same, I know!)
It was 100 degrees in the shade today. Time to sneak out early again for my walk! I guess my sit up tape is working, cause now when I do it, it hurts! Hopefully I'll have washboard abs in time for Tahoe in 2 weeks! :)
I want washboard abs! Thanks for the group hug. I totally need it! :) I've not been getting out to exercise this week and I'm really feeling it...
Snuck out for an early walk before the heat and before the children woke up!
Sometimes it's the only way.
Your love will return before you know it!
ooooooh my gosh i'm so tired.
First: tip. Eat a salad w/ dinner. I had a HUGE salad tonight before dinner and could barely make it all the way thru my main dish. Guess it worked to fill me up!
We took a 30 minute walk today, which was nice.
It's finally cooled down enough to not start sweating when you walk out of the door. Sheesh! so then I moved a ton of rock around the patio ... then started digging up where we'll put the rock .... and did some other outdoor labor. Seriously, like 2 hours of manual labor outside. FantastiC!
did you know carrying moderately heavy boxes can burn up to 500 calories/hour? So ... I'm using that from mydailyplate.com as my equivelant for moving rocks for 40 minutes. WHOOYEAH!!!!!!
I'm back to my smoothie with a big wad of fresh spinach in it! Way to get those fruits AND vegetables!
how are those washboard abs coming, laura?
i'm eating terribly right now. i should go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200. :(
having basically 1 vehcile has me considering getting an ab workout video....any good suggestions?
OHHHHHHHHHHHk. here's my tip for the day.
i just searched for ab workout on YouTube. Woah! TONS of options, and all free. My day just improved!
Ok, today I thought I'd start my day with a workout! I know, big change. :)
I did the youtube search and did an ab workout from sparkpeople ..... not sure I'll have the washboard abs Laura does, but it's a start. They have several different videos focusing on specific areas of the body, and the girl that does them is super great. Not cheesy or anything. Just very professional, matter of fact. Giving several options. Plus she includes stretching, which I like. :)
Karen, funny! I did my morning walk. I love the cool air before a hot day.
I'm about to do my ab tape. No washboard yet, starting with keeping it from hanging out! I did try on my surf shorts I bought years ago and they fit! Minor miracle.
Now this is serious. I'm considering giving up sugar. Any thoughts?
Squeezed in the ab tape before picking up the boys from camp! I've been doing it twice a week and it is getting slightly less painful. I have an old The FIRM abs tape. I like it. They are good for results!
