KAREN.

You are the winner.  By one day!  Laura gave you a run for your money.

Karen posted 13 of the 16 days and Laura posted 12 of the 16 days!

Karen, you win a $50 gift certificate to your fave place for summer fashion!

New contest for July:

Give your ideas (in the comments, of course) for healthy life choices...the person with the most days of suggestions will win a $50 gift certificate for an artist's day.  This means a fun day out for just you and this $50 gift certificate will go toward that date with yourself.

As moms...spouses...women...we want to be healthy so that we can hang around for as long as possible and be there for the people who count on us.  We also want to be healthy because it helps our energy, our moods, our days to go more smoothly, and we feel like we're doing the right thing.

Below are some ideas to help you prevent obesity in your home.  (from Carolina's Health Summer 2009):

Encourage activity.  Kids (and I would say we) need a minimum of an hour of daily physical activity.  Try family walks or encourage your family members to participate in a sport or volunteer in the community.

Make it a family affair.  Don't single out an overweight child or person; cook up nutritious meals for everyone and avoid buying junk food.

Limit TV, computer and video game time, and discourage eating in front of the TV.  Mindless snacking is a big source of extra calories.

Skip the force-feeding.  Don't force kids to clean their plate if they're not hungry.

Cut back on juice and other sugary beverages.  Drinking plain water, flavored water or seltzer can save hundreds of calories (and dollars).

Champion breakfast.  A healthy breakfast ramps up metabolism, gives kids energy and helps curb overeating later in the day.

Let there be snacks.  Fresh or dried fruit, nuts, low-fat yogurt and air popped popcorn can give kids a nutrient boost and prevent overeating.  But don't be too strict-let your child know that the occasional pizza run with friend is OK, too.

Be supportive.  Remind your family that you love them no matter what and that many of the celebrities they see on TV don't have realistic body types.

You can check your body mass index (BMI) here.

healthy. LIFE.

giving up sugar? how bold ...... i'm not a sugar addict (it happens when you grow up in a house w/ 3 diabetics), but I don't think tonight's pumpkin pancakes would have been the same w/o it .... ya know?

oh, totally put the odometer on my bike. i like it. now i know how far i ride and can estimate calories burned based on ride/time. niiiiiiice! :) rode twice today on errands. about 20 mintutes/4.5 miles. :)

I'd say my suggestion for the day is an odometer on your bicycle. Seriously, it cost me about $30 .... and I love that now I know how far I've gone. It totally motivated me to get out and be active this morning. :)

oh, and I forgot to add I've had the darn thing in its BOX for like 8 years ... I've been meaning to do it FOR EIGHT YEARS ..... and just have been lazy. Now I have a reason to ride my bike more. :)

Laura, giving up sugar? Whoa! I don't think that I can do that. I did give up dairy for a while a some years ago. It was really good and I lost a lot of weight. It was hard though! And the first time I drank milk again it tasted like a cow smells. Weird. Giving up milk is supposed to take off a layer of fat that everyone has and can't get rid of unless they give up dairy. Not sure how viable that idea is...

I want to ride my bike! Except that it's got two flat tires. Do you know how to fix flats? Taking the bike apart always worries me...on that back tire....

An odometer would be awesome. Gotta get my tires fixed so I can do that. I'm so in need of some exercise. Being a single mom for a week has totally thrown off all of my schedules in every way...

Had an informal pool party at my in-laws today. It's over 100 again! Not too aerobic but actually put on a suit and it felt so good to swim! It was fun to play with the kids in the pool. Oh summer!

Brought a berry salad with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries in a blue and white bowl. I should have photographed it!

I am off wheat and dairy still and I would say it definitely shed a "layer" of fat. I don't like the smell of milk either and am mildly lactose intolerant so it was really just cheese I had to give up.

The reason I thought about sugar is that although I have made progress and feel more fit, I still have another "layer" there. I thought about how I could get rid of it and sugar was my answer. I haven't done it yet. But I am mentally preparing. :)

Karen, great job with the odometer. The reason it took you 8 years is because it was time. It wasn't time before. That's why it's so meaningful to you now!

Here I am posting to myself...Karen? Taking Sunday off? :)

Well, I got my lazy butt out there and walked 6 1/2 miles by myself in the heat. My body was complaining for the first couple of miles but after that it was kind of fun. There was a good Safeway for a bathroom and fill up my water bottle. I get a lot worked on when it's me, myself and I.

I've been reading the Dave Ramsey book Davina sent me for one of the prizes and it really is resonating. I really want to do a remodel project in my living room (where I meet my clients), but I also want to pay off my credit card and my husband's car! And that's to start! Once you read Dave, you can't look at money the same again. Thanks Davina (really!).

Today, I feel like I'm going to go over on what I should eat .... we're having bangers & mash tonight. brauts + mashed potatoes.

This isn't really a health tip, but we made a BIG vat of mashed potatoes awhile ago ..... and there was too much for us to eat. so we froze it. pulled it out of the freezer today. excited to eat it! :)

let me edit my tip from yesterday: if you un-freeze mashed potatoes, pour the extra fluid/water off of them. I didn't and they were pretty runny :(

Do you have a butt of steele? Too bad on the mashies.

We finally cooled off around here. Have a cool morning breeze which means the day won't be so hot. Went for my 30 minute walk this morning. Felt great.

I need to go to bed earlier. Did you know you can lose weight from sleeping more???
