Move it Monday.
spring break.
I love spring break. I love having the kids home. I love the fun we have. The late nights. Sleeping in every morning. Going on day trips. Long weekend trips. I love it all...except that we completely are out of our normal routine....
The one where I exercise every day. The one where I don't over eat at every meal. The one where I don't have two desserts every day because we're on vacation. The one where I try to have some self-control around brownies.
That normal routine.
The rest of it, I'll take.
So today's the day to get back to normal. Eat less. Exercise my 20 minutes. Only eat my Dove piece of chocolate.
That's what today is.
This past week reminds me, though, that I need to look ahead to summer. Summer is the epitome of no normal routine...for THREE months! Talk about a recipe for disaster in the eating right department and getting exercise.
If I don't get a plan I'll sleep in every day with the kids, have ice cream and snow cones every chance I get, eat 1 or 10 s'mores around the campfire, skip my 20 minutes for a day and then realize it's been three months since I last did my 20 minute walk...it will take me by surprise. I'll wonder, "where did this 20 pounds come from?????....I'm showing this at the POOL?!"
So, spring break was my little reminder that I need to have a plan for those weeks of blissful summer when I'll have no normal routine...
What do you do to stick with it in the summer? Please DO TELL in the comments! I need all the help I can get...
I'm feeling like Superman around kryptonite.
ETA: This month's winner will get either one of my kits OR $75 to Home Depot (or Lowe's) whichever one you like best. It is spring...and I know I've been itching to buy flowers for my new yard!
vacation. LIFE.

{sigh}
I'm officially 20 lbs over my pre-prego weight (and not far off of my all-time high!) I'd prided myself on the fact that while I wasn't quite at the weight I wanted to be for the last few years, I wasn't gaining. Well, now I am. Party's over.
As for summer, that's always a challenge. We'll do bike rides, swimming, and walks together, but probably I'll just mostly leave them at home watching tv for a bit while I go get my workout done.
I'm a runner, so I always sign up for races several months ahead of time. That way, I will have to stick with my training plan. It could be a 5K, half marathon, or marathon, but it always helps me to have a goal. Anyone could do this with walking or walking/jogging. 5K's are great motivation. BTW, I'm registered for the love affair workshop and I'm so excited to meet you!
Our goal for the summer is just to get out of the house and get active, go swimming, play at the park, drink lots of water, get beach body ready! ;) And stay so busy with fun that we don't have time to think about eating!....hopefully!
i put on my bathing suit and jump up and down in front of the mirror.
that should do the trick to get me back in the gym.
:)
This summer, I fear, will have to be an illusion.....I was just looking thru the Land's End catalog tonight.....at the "All over control....Body Lift...look-a-whole-size-smaller-GUARANTEED" wonder swimsuits! Should I get two???? hmmmm.....
on a more serious mote....usually I do water aerobics class while my older kiddos swim....just getting into a bathing suit almost daily is enough to keep fitness at the fore-front of my mind! And this summer I will have a baby on my hip....aahh! no graceful sa-shaying around poolside with baby and gear in tow! :-)
Doing my daily teraphy exercises and stretches.....having a good week food-wise!
Also, I keep watermelon cut up all summer long.....its a great snack!
Yesterday, Erik and I played disc golf. That's 9 holes/30 min of walking. :)
As far as being fit in the summer ... it seems for me it's easier to be active (but of course I don't have kids ...). I'm in the garden, digging in the dirt, going on bike rides.
But kids COULD be a good motivator. They need 60 min of exercise, right? Why NOT ride bikes w/ them, Davina????
oh yeah, and as Rebekah said ... watermelon and fresh fruit. I LOVE that there are SO MANY fruits and veggies around in the summer!
walked to my friend's house to return a power tool. about 6 blocks .... so 10 minutes in all. later, walked back there to work on the chicken coop they're building in their backyard. so there are my 20 minutes ... need to stay motivated to do weights!
yea, i exercised today. short treadmill jog for warm up, lifting weights for upper body, then a little hoop practice--until i broke a nail. i felt really lame, i promise i'm not one of "those" girls, but it could have gotten really ugly (bloody and more painful) if i hadn't stopped. total workout today was 30 minutes.
i have a tough time getting motivated to go for a walk or jog outside during the super hot and humid summer months. i did ok last summer, but i want to do better this year. early morning would be ideal, but i'm NOT a morning person, so i'm not going to kid myself. some ideas i have: swimming laps, making some hula hoops to hoop at home in the garage or shade outside, jumping rope in the garage, digging raking and picking up rocks in the yard, and getting out and walking anyway.
I'm doing better this week so far! yay! I had a crazy busy day today but managed to fit in some strength training.
Hope your fingernail is doing better, Amanda.
Karen, I hear you about staying motivated to do weights. I know they are a huge benefit to women for bone strength and so many other ways with metabolism. I feel good when I do them...I think I just know that they are going to be boring and hurt...
Fresh fruit! I love fresh fruit in the summer...I'll have to eat more of that than icecream.
Disc golf sounds fun. And it would be a great workout for me since I have ZERO aim with a frisbee. Riding bikes is super fun. I love it. My four year old usually has a little harder time keeping up with all of the bigger legs. It is fun, though. I'll see about the heat and humidity this summer. I'm working myself up for it and hoping it will be less suffocating than I remember it being last August...
Rebekah, those swimsuits sound wonderful! How are your knees coming along?
Kayleen...too busy to eat...ummm.... :)
Shari, that's hilarious! That would totally work for me...don't know that I could handle seeing it though.
Melissa, great idea. I think that's why I've kind of gotten out of the habit. I haven't thought of a new goal to work toward.
Shannon, that's where I was last fall...I feel your pain...
Here's to a great summer. I'm loving the ideas. Keep them coming...
I did 10 mins of ab exercises....it was supposed to be 20 mins, but I decided or my abs decided that 10 was enough and then took a walk for 10+ mins with my kids.
So I SUCK at staying motivated to do things.
I ate only 1/2 of my burger at Braums today .... and not all of my shake. :) so I'm doing better at not eating everything .... but staying motivated ... now that my goal of doing the weights regularly .... ugh.
But I'm doing quite a bit of subbing, so I get a good amount of walking in.
ok, no more excuses. it starts ... tomorrow. ;)
Ummmm...that milkshake sounds REALLY good right about now....it's a good thing everything closes in Clover at 9pm...
Is Milk Shake a diet food? Karen, you are so funny!
We like to walk on the bike trail to the coffee shop (it's all about choices), then to the library. It's good to bring the kids along and it makes the trip more of an adventure.
yes, my fingers are all doing fine now. :D yesterday i hooped for 30 minutes then did some lower back exercises--extensions and curls. this evening i should be able to go for a walk. i'll let yall know.
tomorrow morning my husband and i are going to FL for a cousin's wedding--where i'll be a guest, not working. then next week we're going to disney world. vacation. yea. i've done really well this week making sure all the loose ends are tied up for work so i'll be able to enjoy my break. i'm sure i'll get my exercise walking around the parks.
ok, i got off my arse.
i wanted to get my compost pile going w/ grass clippings, only hubby hasn't mowed. SO I did it. we have a push mower, so it's a good workout. about 35 minutes worth of walking/pushing and then mixing up the compost. I'm baaaaaaaack! :)
oh, i forgot to mention the best part.
the SUN is actually out, so not only did I work out, get the grass mowed, work on the compost pile, but I caught some rays, too!!!! :)
Karen, you are a modern day marvel! You do things like mow, compost, build a rain catcher...you should have a TV show!
I simply walked 3 miles. And it was good.
Walked to school. Walked back holding Charlie's hand. Sweet.
Do we still write about what excercise we're doing? Or is it tips only?
You got me in the habit of checking in everyday!
I walked 9 miles today. Not as spiritually uplifting as the beach and Golden Gate Park, but still did the job. :) I have 5 weeks to go until my big walk in San Diego. I hope I can keep up the routine when I'm done, cause I love how my body has changed.
