Gingerbread Party
A little party.
So...we have our Christmas Chain and one of the days was to make gingerbread houses. I've never made gingerbread houses and thought it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I decided to give my sister a call since she makes gingerbread houses every year. We chatted and she told me about the fun party she does every year for her kids. She makes a gingerbread house for each of her kids and one of their friends. Each of the kids invites a friend and they get to bring a creative candy idea to share with everyone else. I loved the idea, told my kids about it, and of course, at that point there was no turning back. We were having a party.
At 4am (in the middle of making eight houses) no matter how easy the recipe was, it was taking a LONG time to make all of these houses!
The morning of the party arrived and I had slept exactly 6 hours over about 48 hours. As silly as it sounds...it was absolutely worth it. We had so much fun!!
We had a lot of candy and I think MOST of it was eaten and some of it made it onto the gingerbread houses. Two for their mouth and one for their house. Two for their house and one for their mouth.
Even though they were eating a lot of the candy they were also being creative with their houses. Coconut for snow, gummy worms for icicles lights, and licorice for pathways...and then, of course, getting as much other candy as possible onto the house (because they needed a lot to eat later...because they didn't eat enough now...).
The kids are already talking about doing this again next year...I think maybe I'll start making the gingerbread with the kids a little earlier though. lol.
fun. LIFE.

whoa! That's a lot of work, Davina! :) What a good mom! I admit--- I buy the premade kits or use graham crackers... not as yummy, but I don't know if I have the patience for what you did! Cute shots, too!:) Happy New Year!
Davina,
I love that you made the houses. We usually get the kits and even though I tell my daughter not to eat it (you never know with kits how old it all is) she always does YUCK! At least you know what they are eating and it is deliciously messy. Your littlest one looks so cute in her white (princess?) dress. I love that shot of her it is so vintage and timeless and is so cute!
Happy New Year!

Oh my gosh! That looks like SO much fun!
Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family, Davina.
Davina you are super mom! I love love that you made the gingerbread yourself, you may be on track for mom of the year! So many people get so tangled up in the craziness of life that they forget what it feel like to do something from scratch and make these amazing memories. Just think when your kids get older they will look back at this party and say "yeah remember when mom made us gingerbread houses and we had an awesome party with our friends, the house smelled so good and we go so sick from eating way too much candy. All our friends though mom was so cool!"
You are awesome.
Happy New Year to you and your family.
Wow, that is amazing! We got the kit at Trader Joe's and have yet to do it! (I think my sister has one laying around from last year..). The pictures are great. Inspiring. Love the one with the red socks! You should do photo books of this stuff for your kids (I'm sure you have one million photos of everything. me too, it's endless. This year I am trying to get them edited and in books, slides shows, etc. But trying to remember to make real products that last, not just computer viewable....but this series is one for posterity!)
Can I come play at your house? :) This looks awesome - love the images.
Davina - I love these!! Love the little girl in the dress - so cute!! I love love love and am so impressed with the fact that you made the gingerbread from scratch!!! Thanks for sharing!
What "sweet" memories your little ones will have of this christmas tradition. Way to go! Your'e a great mom! Fun pictures of the party!
I love LOVE LOVE these images here. Such a good story. I saw the whole thing, I felt it, I could even imagine smelling and hearing it all. What a great type of Photography, full of the 5 senses with only one.

Oh, Davina! This looks like such fun! My sister and I made a gingerbread house each year with my grandma when we were little- a beloved tradition that my sister is now continuing with her own son. I love the idea of the party- such gooey, yummy details! Happy '08!
You are the sweetest!!! Your kids are so lucky to have such a wonderful mom-what a hero you are for making all those houses! I've never even attempted to make ONE!
Hope you guys had a wonderful Christmas and that your New Year is off to a great start! Hope to see you in March!! :) xo
super cute! the colors are so vibrant and the kids look like they had a blast! what a super mommy! It wouldn't be Christmas without Harry Connick and Candy!
I agree. Harry Connick Jr is a must at Christmas time. I suppose all great photographers listen to Harry :) (or maybe just you and me)
