Move it Monday: These shoes are made for walkin'
a dozen ways.
I found this great little article here: A Dozen Ways To Improve Your Walking Workouts
I think a lot of us walk, some of us run, and some of us do a little of both. This week, here are some tips for the walkers out there....
A Dozen Ways to Improve Your Walking Workouts
• Try to walk briskly for at least half an hour every day, or one hour four times a week. I
•Make an effort to walk as much as possible. Skip elevators and escalators and take the stairs.
• Another approach: get a pedometer and see how many steps you take a day. To start... aim for 3,000.
• If you want to go faster, instead of taking longer steps, take faster steps. Lengthening your stride can increase strain on your feet and legs.
• Swing your arms.
• Add some interval training. For example, speed up for a minute or two every five minutes. Or alternate one fast mile with two slower miles.
• Choose varied terrains. Walking on grass or gravel burns more calories than walking on a track.
• Walk up and down hills to build strength and stamina and burn more calories.
• Try a walking stick or poles. This is like cross-country skiing without the skis.
• Use hand weights, but carefully.
• Try backward walking for a change of pace.
• Choose the right shoes. Avoid stiff-soled shoes that don't bend.

OHHHHHHHMYGOOOOOODNESS.
I walked like a maniac today. At least 3 hours. All around DC. Seriously I'm estimating a minimum of 6 miles, which is a LOT for me.
My legs aren't speaking to me right now.
Hi Davina, I haven't checked in with your blog in an age and saw this great post on walking! I love it. I've been walking now, about 3x a week and LOVE it. My favorite form of release, prayer time and all around appreciation of my life (plus my dog gets a work out). I recently lost one of my closest friends, and I started to walk during her illness. So nice to see your new work, from your new hometown. Good luck with Love Affair :) deb
It's been awhile, but took a nice 20 minute walk tonight. Can't beat this weather!!!
On location shooting all last week, so no chance to post---but TONS of walking! Dropped my pedometer in the car on the way to the airport, so no chance to track the mileage---but TONS of walking. Had to eat at really crazy times---but the look on the server's face when I ordered a bowl of broccoli at the Hard Rock Cafe at 1:00 am---priceless! (I get so tired of restaurant food!)
This week's plan: walk and eat some real food!
Love the walking tips! Walking backwards...I do this often...people probably think I'm crazy, but it's supposed to be great for you thighs!
