Move it Monday.

family and fitness.

Getting family on board for eating right can be a challenge.  This morning I had a mom's group come to my studio for a "How to take better pictures of your kids" mini class.  After it was over I was talking to a mom about getting our kids to drink milk and eat veggies...especially the ones who are 100% against the idea.   I wish I could say we had some fantastic ideas after a completely enlightening brainstorming session...but no such luck.  If you have ideas PLEASE put them in the comments so that we can all benefit from your wisdom!

**Don't forget the contest challenge this month!  It will go thru next Monday.  The top 4 people who log the most miles of walking/running/biking will win a $30 gift certificate each to the store of their choice.  You can still win!  Make sure to post your miles everyday here on this blog post...**

In the meantime, here are some tips from my health insurance lady that will get your family more active:

* Laughter:  Activity has to be fun to keep the interest and imagination of young ones.  Whether it’s tag, ring around the rosy, or a game of catch, it all counts as exercise.  Active play helps kids learn that it’s fun to move.

*Family time:  Evenings and weekends are great opportunities for walks,  hikes, and bike rides.  Enjoying exercise together speaks volumes to your children – they learn that activity is a natural and positive part of life.

*Freestyle fun:   Sometimes the best activity is the one they make up.  Spontaneous running, kicking, throwing, and jumping strengthen young bodies and help them burn off steam.

*Moving vacations:  Make a point of including active fun in your travel itinerary.  Enjoy water parks, the zoo, and other attractions that involve physical fitness.

*Fitness friends:  Build exercise into your family social time.  Get together with other kids and parents to enjoy active time together.  Enroll your kids in community or school sports teams/games.

*Role model:  Making fitness a priority in your own life encourages your kids to do the same.  Show them how cool it is to be active and healthy.

*Less screen time:  The more TV and computer time your kids have, the less active they’ll be.  Set clear limits and stick to them.

fit. LIFE.

I find that showing kids where things come from and involving them in the process of preparing food makes them WAY more inclined to eat it. Maybe take them to a farm where they can see where milk comes from, or plant a garden and let them be a part of the process--from seed to table. I've seen this work for a few children, but the younger the better!

We are preparing for a century ride on our tandem (we love our picture you took) and realized that we are up to 600 miles this summer. Feels great - we love the Legacy Trail.

Ran 3 Miles this morning - it's finally cooling down so it feels great oustide. And, I just got totally intimated by the mileage of these bikers!

Hi Davina!

I ran 5 miles today. I had been working my way up and was getting stuck at 4 miles. Today I said, let's just see, and I did it! I don't run fast, but I keep moving. :)

Rosaura - awesome job at pushing yourself. Sometimes it just takes a little determination to put yourself over the top.

Ran 6 miles in hills today.

Wow! You guys are rockin'!!! Great job walking, running, biking!

I have been out of it. I pulled my back out twice last week (the second time while riding my bike...go figure!). I also got the results of my MRI and found out I have about five major things wrong with my knee. My doctor and I agreed I would no longer walk more than three miles and I will switch my exercise to biking and swimming. This is an adjustment as my whole last year was devoted to walking. I LOVE my bike so will work on a new routine when my back heals. Needless to say between the back pain and bad news it was a rough week. I am unstoppable though and will find my new way.

I am still off sugar...it's been about a month. Also off wheat and dairy still since March. Unstoppable. I need a t-shirt. :)

I miss you guys and can't wait to have some aerobic achievements to write about again!

Ok - I know it's the first and this contest is probably over - but I walked with a friend last night and logged another 4 miles at least - so I thought I'd come back to record it!

Laura - I'm so sorry for your back - I know it's so frustrating when you can't do the things you want to do! Great job on the "no sugar" though!

Is everyone okay with 3 miles of biking being equal to 1 mile of walking?

October 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdavina

or do you think all miles should count equally?

October 2, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdavina

I think 3 miles of biking equals 1 mile of walking sounds good. There's no way a walker/runner can really keep up with a bikers' mileage - but a biker might have a different take on that! :-)

I'm okay with that scenerio and I appreciate you finding a way for me to still participate!

October 2, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

i think a ratio for biking to walking is fair.

Laura, I'm so sorry to hear that you've had so many setbacks this weeks. Dang. I hope this week will be better for you...
